What is Hirudotherapy?
Hirudotherapy is a medical treatment that uses FDA approved medical-grade leeches for various medicinal therapies.
The treatment is often used by micro-surgeons to reattach severed blood vessels successfully. Among many medicinal benefits, hirudotherapy helps to ensure post surgery tissue remains healthy, by forcing blood flow to the target area. Hirudotherapy also assists with preventing blood clots and other post surgery complications.
Medical leeches contain many pharmacologically active ingredients that can be effectively infused into the patient’s system, through the attachment of the leeches to a given target area.
How does Hirudotheraphy work?
Specialised hirudotherapy leech saliva contains a number of medicinal substances, including hirudin, calin and anaesthetic compounds. Hirudin helps prevent blood clots, and Calin binds to collagen – which neutralises clotting for an extended period.
During hirudotherapy, leeches are attached to the target area. Once attached they release substances that not only thin blood and prevent clotting, they also help improve circulation and prevent tissue damage.
Seraph Medical successfully treated a patient with a brain injury, caused by an aneurysm, with hirudotherapy. Five years after her life saving surgery, she continued to struggle with memory loss and was unable to read aloud. To read the full story, click here.
